Sebastian Weiss: pianist

Where would we find you on a rainy Sunday afternoon?

Sebastian Weiss, pianist Rainy Sunday afternoons always go well with a good cup of coffee. I might go to Taste of Bitter Love on Hackney Road, a tiny coffee shop that serves excellent coffee and homemade cakes and is just right to read your weekend newspaper. Or I might go to the National Theatre where you can enjoy your coffee while listening to some live music in the foyer. Free except for the coffee.

What do you do to recreate Germany in the UK for yourself when you feel homesick?

Sebastian Weiss I am guilty of watching the long-running German TV show “Tatort” (crime scene) which you can watch online at the ARD Mediathek. Sometimes I bake some rolls for a real German Sunday breakfast.

Which German author or book is a must-read in English?

Sebastian Weiss One of my favorite German books recently was Wolf Haas’ “Der Brenner und der Liebe Gott”, but I am not sure if that has been translated into English yet. Although Haas is Austrian, this might serve as proof that some native German speakers actually have a sense of humour. I also enjoyed reading Daniel Kehlmann’s “Measuring the World” and Ödön von Horváth’s “The Age of the Fish”.

Which German band or singer has the best chance to make it big in Britain?

Sebastian Weiss Some of my favorite musicians in Berlin are all involved in very interesting projects that would certainly deserve to make it big in the UK: Sebastian Merk, Heinrich Koebberling, Stefan Weeke, Pepe Berns, Arne Jansen, Eric Schaefer to name but a few.

What is the best souvenir /gift to bring back from Germany for your British friends?

Sebastin Weiss Around Christmas time I would definitely be thrilled to get Lebkuchen and Stollen which are typical German pastries during that time of year and really delicious. In the spring white asparagus would be my present of choice.
