Together with Routes into Languages, the German Section at Newcastle University organised their own celebration of football and culture in 2010 - the Bratwurstpokal!
On 15 June, Year 9 pupils from schools around Newcastle arrived at the university for a thrilling day including German language activities and a football tournament at the Cochrane Park sport pitches. Altogether, roughly 80 students from four different schools took part, supported by student ambassadors and staff from Newcastle and Durham Universities. The students were all studying German and the day was very much focused on learning German as a foreign language.
The day started with workshops, in which the students learned and revised football-related German vocabulary and wrote their own team name and anthem in German. After a picnic lunch, the football got underway with a specially made German warm-up song.
Eight teams competed for the Bratwurstpokal, but there can be only one winner, and this year it was the Superschule team from Conyers School from Stockton-on-Tees / North Yorkshire.
The Bratwurstpokal 2010 turned out to be an overwhelming success. The students had a day full of fun and football, and the sun shone all day long!
