More than 500 students and school pupils from all over the UK descended on the German Ambassador's Residence on Thursday, 21 October to attend the Think German Career Fair.
A welcome address was given by the Ambassador, Georg Boomgaarden. Andreas Hoeschen, DAAD Director, also gave a talk on Study and Research in Germany. Other speakers included Bernd Hake, Managing Director of Hugo Boss UK, Michelle Brassell from CILT, and Angeliki Petrits from the European Commission.
The fair provided the opportunity to make contact with representatives from German and Austrian companies, as well as British companies with business links to German speaking countries, and to find out about employment opportunities.
Organised jointly with the German-British Chamber of Industry and Commerce, the following companies/institutions were represented: BMW, Bosch, Commerzbank, E.ON UK plc, Erste Group Bank AG, German Academic Exchange Service, K+K Hotels, Haribo UK, Lufthansa German Airlines, Mercedes Benz UK Limited, Munich Re Life Services Limited, Siemens Plc, Umdasch Shop Concept, Voestalpine UK Ltd.
Business English has been a standard subject in German universities for many years, and now Business German is becoming increasingly popular in the USA. "It is really valuable and helpful for the future," said a US student of the American University, Washington D.C.
In the UK the Goethe Institut London offers an extensive range of German courses, including Business German.
Germany is renowned for science and industry, with famous exports including everything from luxury cars to lightweight sports shoes.
