With Germany providing one the UK’s largest trading partners, the widening of employment opportunities is a compelling motivation to learn German. While the world of work may seem like a distant concern during school years, seven pupils from Dunfermline were given a taste of what it’s like to work for business in Germany.
Their experience was part of the link between Dunfermline High School and Otto-Hahn-Schule near Frankfurt. In October last year, ten pupils from the German school were hosted by families in Scotland, where they undertook a week of work experience.
In April this year, the Dunfermline pupils went to Hanau to complete the return leg of the exchange. They worked in a range of businesses, including a chemical company, an animal home, a hotel and a nursery. They had a fantastic time, improving their language skills, and gaining an insight into both family and working life in Germany. There was only one thing they won’t miss – the 7.50am starts!
