On Thursday 30 June the German Embassy hosted the Think German 'Sommerfest der Deutschen Sprache'. Over 150 teachers and representatives from education institutions came from
all over the UK.
It was the eighth summer party, and, as usual, it provided the perfect occasion to hand out the Embassy-sponsored German Teacher Awards. This year's prizes were awarded to Greg Horton from Wildern School in Southampton, Annika Jones from St Mary's School in Calne and Elisabeth Semper from St Leonards School in Fife. The Lifetime Achievement Award was given to Virginia Hanna from the Ladies' College in Guernsey. The Goethe-Institut sponsored the Peter Boaks Award, which was given to Sara Sullivan from Woodlands School in Basildon.
Deputy Ambassador Dr Lübkemeier opened the festivities after the prize-giving in the gardens of the Ambassador's Residence. German, Austrian, Swiss and British organisations also gave reports on German language and culture in their area of work.
The German Teacher Award prize winners receive a personal prize of £750 and a certificate. The purpose of the Award is to recognise outstanding achievement by individual teachers of German in the UK, to highlight and pay tribute to the work of German teachers in the UK; and to encourage the commitment of the winners' schools to modern language teaching.
