On 4 February 2010, around 20 GCSE and A-Level pupils from four different schools in the North East arrived at Newcastle University to take part in the fifth North East German Challenge.
The students were split into two groups, with the A-Level group participating in a linguistics quiz and the GCSE students using their language skills creatively to make short films promoting German.
The GCSE students were split up into three groups, with university students scattered amongst them, helping them to make their short films and develop their ideas. In no time at all, enthusiastic actors, cameramen and directors were standing in the shoes that, minutes before, had been filled by slightly self-conscious teenagers.
The films were made on time with what can only be described as German efficiency and the groups made their way across to the Great North Museum, where a screening took place and prizes were awarded for the films and the winners of the quiz. The fifth North East German Challenge turned out to be an overwhelming success, with smiling faces from teachers, lecturers and, of course, the pupils and students who had taken part.
